My class made this by creating a stencil and taping it down to water color paper. Then each student selected a color that they wanted their fingerprints to be and placed their prints around the stencil. We are going to make one of these for each teacher that worked with my class this year (using different stencils)

I wanted to do something different this year for a Mother's day present for my students and I came up with this quick and easy gift that could be done with students of any age.

Step 1: Have your students use tempera paint to paint stripes across a blank piece of paper (make sure you use thick paper). Make sure you give them enough different colors to make it bright and colorful!

Step 2: Now this is the trickiest step. Take a piece of black construction paper and fold it in half. Place the student's had on the folded black paper with the pointer finger and thumb touching the folded edge so that your two fingers hang of the edge a little. Trace the student's had and cut it out. Make sure you cut through both pieces of paper and that you leave the pointer and thumb fingers connected.

Step 3: Unfold the hand and see how the reflection creates a heart in the middle. 
I wrote the following poem to go along with the hands. 
For My Mom
These hands of mine have formed a heart.
This is a symbol of our love that will never part.
Thank you for all the wonderful things that you do.
Most importantly, thank you for being you.
I love you more than words can say.
I hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Step 4: Print off the poem and have the students cut it out (I used crafting scissors to make it look a little nicer) and have the students use a glue stick to glue the hands and the poem to their painting and voilà beautiful one of a kind piece of art.

I work with mostly autistic students and fidgets are a necessary tool for a calm day. Fidgets are toys or items that keep students' hands busy, which will allow them to focus and thus facilitating learning. The problem is that some fidgets can be very expensive. I have found that something simple like playdough is loved by everyone. The bonuses of making your own play dough is that it saves you money, it lasts longer, and it is a fun activity to do with all of your students. I bought a ton of Easter eggs from the Dollar Store and I felt like the eggs would be the perfect container to be able to take the play dough home or keep in their desks. 
My students were very excited today, because they earned enough points on ClassDojo to make their very own play dough! My sister found the perfect recipe at Imagination Tree. It is very simple and easy to follow and the play dough lasts much longer than store bought play dough. The trick to keep the food coloring under control is to add it to the boiling water and then add the water with food coloring to your dry ingredients. I have a tea kettle in my room, so I used that to get hot water. After you add the hot water to the dry mix, use a spoon to stir the ingredients together and the mixture cools down rather quickly so that the students can knead their dough. 
My students were thrilled with the result and asked if we could make it again next week. :)


]]><![CDATA[Wheel of Fortune Wizard]]>Wed, 23 Apr 2014 22:18:39 GMThttp://www.kendrafrank.com/my-class/wheel-of-fortune-wizardI was watching Wheel of Fortune the other night and I watched Emil De Leon make the "most amazing solve" in the past 30 years according to Pat Sajak. As an avid Wheel of Fortune watcher, I couldn't believe my eyes. Emil only had 2 letters of the 12 word puzzle and yet he solved the problem in record time. No one could believe it.  The next day I went to work and discovered that Emil had gone to FDR Elementary School, the elementary school that I teach at, and that he has a nephew that is currently in the second grade at my school. Following the airing of his episode, Emil made the rounds to all of the talk shows, including Ellen and The Today Show.

My class created Silhouette Art that included their ClassDojo avatars and adjectives that described each student. This art looks pretty labor intensive, but it is far easier then you would think. We used the document camera to take a picture of each student standing sideways, then each student outlined their projected image onto black construction paper. The students carefully cut out their silhouettes and glued them to a white piece of construction paper. We are also practicing typing in our class and the students took the words that they chose to describe themselves and typed them on the computer. I printed out their avatars off of ClassDojo and then the students glued their names, avatars, and describing words onto their silhouettes. I think the artwork turned out great!
